José Mourinho, one of football’s most celebrated and controversial managers, has ventured into the wine world with the launch of his very own wine. Known for his pragmatic and, at times, unpopular football style, Mourinho has established himself as a giant in European football. He has managed some of the continent’s most renowned clubs, including Chelsea, Real Madrid, Internazionale, and now Fenerbahçe in Istanbul. Despite his success on the pitch, it is his time at Porto where he truly made his mark, winning domestic titles, cups, and the prestigious Champions League in 2004.

It is therefore fitting that his first wine would come from the region closely associated with Porto—the Douro Valley. This connection to Porto and its wines marks a special beginning for Mourinho's entry into the wine industry.

The Special One: A Douro red wine

Mourinho’s wine, called “The Special One,” is a red wine crafted from a blend of some of the most prestigious grapes from the Douro region: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, and Sousão. These varieties are well-known in the growing Douro still wine industry and reflect the unique characteristics of the region. The name “The Special One” is a direct reference to the famous moniker Mourinho gave himself during his successful spell at Chelsea.

The wine’s label features a distinctive graphic that depicts Mourinho in an iconic moment from his career—his emotional sprint onto the Camp Nou pitch after his Inter Milan side knocked out Barcelona in the 2010 Champions League semi-finals. This image captures Mourinho’s passion and larger-than-life personality, mirroring the enthusiasm he brings to everything he does, both on and off the field.

Mourinho’s passion for quality and excellence

In the presentation box for “The Special One,” Mourinho expresses his personal philosophy on the wine. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and pursuit of excellence in football, Mourinho applies the same values to his wine. He describes the wine as a product of “precision, quality, and excellence,” values that are integral to everything he undertakes.

Mourinho’s connection to the Douro Valley runs deep, as it is one of his favourite wine regions in Portugal. He describes the wine as “handpicked from one of my favourite regions in Portugal” and reflects his deep love for his homeland. He also stresses that the wine is made with care and passion, offering it as “a gift from one special one to another.” This sentiment speaks to the spirit of sharing and celebrating life’s important moments, whether they be victories on the pitch or time spent with loved ones.

A wine to be shared and enjoyed

Mourinho’s “The Special One” wine is not just a drink but a reflection of his personal values—precision, passion, and a love for celebrating special moments. Just as he values teamwork and camaraderie in football, the wine is intended to be shared with others, making it perfect for special occasions. Whether you are celebrating a victory, marking a personal milestone, or simply enjoying time with friends, this wine aims to bring people together in celebration.

By entering the wine industry, Mourinho adds another dimension to his legacy, showing that his pursuit of excellence extends beyond the football pitch. As with his coaching career, “The Special One” wine promises to be a success, offering something unique to those who appreciate quality, passion, and the special moments in life. Just like his legendary footballing achievements, this wine has the potential to make an impact and be enjoyed for years to come.
