Aldi has launched an innovative wine in partnership with sustainability-focused brand The Hidden Sea, offering shoppers an opportunity to enjoy a glass of Chardonnay while supporting ocean conservation efforts. The newly released Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay is not just another bottle on the shelf—it’s part of a mission to help reduce plastic waste in the world’s oceans.

This collaboration marks a first in the UK retail space, with Aldi becoming the country’s first supermarket to work directly with The Hidden Sea on an own-label product. Priced at £7.49, the wine aligns with Aldi’s approach of providing affordable products that don’t compromise on ethics or environmental impact.

Wine that makes a difference

What sets this sustainable Chardonnay apart is its tangible environmental impact. For every bottle sold, the equivalent of 10 plastic bottles worth of waste is removed from the ocean, thanks to The Hidden Sea’s partnership with the ReSea Project. This global ocean health initiative organizes large-scale clean-up efforts in coastal and marine areas, ensuring that each purchase contributes directly to restoring ocean ecosystems.

Aldi’s national sustainability director, Liz Fox, spoke about the decision to bring this wine to market. “We know our customers want to shop more sustainably, which is why we’re pleased to be launching this unique wine that will support ongoing industry action to reduce ocean plastic,” she said. “Our Buying Teams are always looking for ways to offer more sustainable options, and we’re proud to be the first supermarket working with The Hidden Sea on our very own label Chardonnay.”

The Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay is now available in Aldi stores across the UK, making it easily accessible for eco-conscious wine lovers looking to make more responsible choices.

The mission behind The Hidden Sea

Founded on a commitment to ocean preservation, The Hidden Sea has become a leading voice in connecting the wine industry with environmental action. Co-founder Justin Moran expressed his excitement over the Aldi partnership, saying: “We are excited to collaborate with Aldi on this initiative, helping its customers champion ocean conservation by choosing our Chardonnay. Each bottle purchased will play a crucial role in funding clean-up projects that remove plastic waste from our oceans, helping to restore marine ecosystems.”

The company’s ongoing partnership with the ReSea Project has already resulted in the removal of millions of plastic bottles’ worth of waste from the ocean. With Aldi’s support, this impact is set to grow even further.

Moran added, “It will be a great achievement to see the wine in stores nationwide. We’re proud that Aldi customers can join us on this mission for a healthier planet.”

Growing trend of sustainability in the drinks industry

The Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay is part of a broader movement in the drinks sector, where brands are increasingly tying their products to meaningful environmental initiatives. Whether through carbon-neutral certifications, regenerative agriculture practices, or ocean clean-up campaigns, wine producers are recognizing that sustainability resonates with today’s consumers.

By combining high-quality wine with real-world action, Aldi and The Hidden Sea are tapping into a powerful message: doing good doesn’t have to come at a premium. The wine’s attractive price point and availability make it a practical option for anyone looking to make a difference with their purchases.

For shoppers, it’s a chance to support a greener future without changing their buying habits drastically. Each bottle sold is a small step toward cleaner oceans—one glass at a time.
