Andrew Shaw, previously buying director at Bibendum, has been appointed to lead the Beers, Wines and Spirits (BWS) division at Marks & Spencer, marking a significant addition to the retailer’s food and drink leadership team. Shaw brings a wealth of retail and drinks industry experience, having worked as a buying manager at Waitrose for five years before joining Bibendum in 2012, where he led wine ranging, supplier relationships, and new product development.

Shaw will now work closely with Lizzy Massey, M&S’s new ambient trading director who joined from Asda in January. Together, they are tasked with supporting the retailer’s broader food transformation strategy, aimed at modernising the M&S offer while preserving its reputation for quality.

A key player in wine innovation

Shaw’s appointment comes on the heels of recent drinks range innovations at M&S. Most notably, the retailer launched a 12-bottle ‘Found’ wine range, which features wines made from lesser-known grape varieties sourced from unexpected regions—encouraging customers to explore more adventurous choices. This followed last year’s successful “This is” collection, a 15-strong wine range grouped by style and labelled for simplicity, designed to help consumers navigate the wine aisle with ease.

Commenting on his new role, Shaw said: “I’m extremely proud to be joining a business with such a strong legacy of quality across its drinks range. I look forward to working with our suppliers and the M&S team to ensure that legacy is maintained, while building on the brilliant initiatives and products the team has launched in recent years.”

M&S food transformation gathers momentum

M&S Food managing director Stuart Machin welcomed Shaw to the team, saying: “We have exceptional talent across the whole of M&S, with a brilliant mixture of new hires and experienced colleagues who are all working hard with renewed focus, energy and determination.”

Shaw’s move to M&S is part of a broader series of strategic appointments within the business. These include Pav Anand as director of strategy, transformation and online; Katharine Haenelt as trading director for Fresh; and Jim Clifton, formerly of Morrisons, as head of space, range and display for M&S Food.

Continued commitment to quality and innovation

In addition to his retail experience, Shaw is a mentor for the Drinks Trust’s Community Mentoring Programme, which launched last year to support the next generation of drinks professionals. His blend of industry knowledge and passion for innovation positions him well to guide the M&S BWS division through its next phase of growth.

As M&S continues its journey to become “more relevant, more often” to modern shoppers, Shaw’s appointment signals a firm commitment to maintaining its high standards in drinks while introducing exciting new options for consumers across the UK.
