Preparations are in full swing for the 2025 edition of Barcelona Wine Week, which returns to Fira de Barcelona from 3–5 February. Since its debut in 2020, just weeks before the global pandemic disrupted travel and trade shows worldwide, the event has rapidly gained momentum—and next year’s fair is set to be its most ambitious yet.

This time around, the fair will span two full pavilions, marking a 30% increase in floor space and a notable signal of its growth and strategic importance. Organisers expect more than 1,200 wineries to take part, representing over 75 of Spain’s geographic and quality designations. These include high-profile names like Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorat and Cava, as well as rising regions such as Alicante, Jumilla and La Mancha.

“The success of the event,” said Javier Pagés, president of Barcelona Wine Week, “and the fact that eight out of ten wineries are returning, demonstrates that the wine sector is clearly committed to Barcelona Wine Week as its leading trade fair and top platform for international promotion.”

A growing international platform

While Spain’s traditional export markets remain important, this year’s edition places a clear emphasis on global diversification. Organisers are targeting emerging opportunities in countries such as South Korea, Japan, Poland, Ireland, Denmark and the Dominican Republic—markets seen as offering long-term potential amid industry-wide challenges like slowing global wine consumption and rising protectionist policies.

To support this global push, the fair has expanded its hosted buyers programme. Backed by government support, the initiative invites high-level importers and distributors to attend. For 2025, the number of international hosted buyers has grown by 8% to 700 attendees. Meanwhile, the domestic market also remains a key focus. Around 1,000 Spanish buyers will attend, spanning large retailers, specialist merchants and hospitality operators.

This approach aligns with the fair’s broader mission to not only promote Spanish wine globally but also to help producers adapt through market diversification, differentiation, and digital transformation.

A tasting programme worth raising a glass to

With more than 350,000 glasses of wine expected to be poured over three days, Barcelona Wine Week is a paradise for those eager to discover Spain’s dynamic wine scene. Beyond casual tasting at exhibitor stands, attendees can also participate in a curated series of masterclasses and events led by renowned winemakers, Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.

Among the standout sessions is a focus on old vines, featuring winemaking icons like Raúl Pérez (El Bierzo) and Fernando Mora MW (Bodegas Frontonio). A special tasting of pre-phylloxera wines will also be held, offering a rare glimpse into ancient vines from Valladolid, Pontevedra and even the volcanic soils of Lanzarote.

Regional expressions will be in the spotlight too. ‘Los 10 magníficos de la D.O. Rías Baixas’ will offer a deep dive into the Albariños of Galicia, while another key session will mark the centenary of Rioja DOCa, featuring a flight of eight historic wines that trace the region’s evolution over time.

Navigating trends and challenges in wine

Beyond tasting, Barcelona Wine Week 2025 will also host a robust programme of talks and seminars addressing the major forces shaping the wine industry. These include deep dives into water scarcity and drought resilience, two increasingly urgent concerns for producers in Mediterranean climates.

Sessions will also explore shifting consumer preferences—like the growing global appetite for white wines—and broader challenges such as sustainability, digital transformation and value retention in mature markets.

These industry conversations aim to help producers and buyers alike gain clarity in a fast-changing global landscape, while also showcasing how Spain’s wine sector is leading with innovation and heritage in equal measure.

Looking ahead

With a larger footprint, deeper international reach, and a standout events calendar, Barcelona Wine Week 2025 is shaping up to be more than just a trade show—it’s a statement of intent from Spain’s wine industry. As global challenges continue to reshape the wine trade, this fair offers both a celebration of Spanish wine’s past and a forward-looking platform for its future.
