More than 40 German tourists from a gun club have set a new beer-drinking record during an eight-hour session in Playa de Palma, Mallorca. Held last Saturday, the group collectively consumed 1,330 glasses of beer, each 200ml in size—equivalent to over 5.8 litres or more than 10 pints per person.

The drinking challenge began around 11am and wrapped up by 7pm, with the final tab coming to approximately €2,793. This feat surpasses the previous record of 1,234 glasses set in October 2023 by a 55-person German tourist group, which included 42 men and 13 women.

Mallorca, a favourite among German holidaymakers, continues to host these record-breaking group outings, with another example in July last year when a German futsal team consumed more than 1,100 beers in a single day.

Irish drinker goes viral with solo Guinness marathon

In a separate display of drinking endurance, an Irish man from Kilkenny has gone viral for consuming 81 pints of Guinness over the New Year’s Eve weekend. Sean Bryan began his beer marathon on 29 December and finished on 31 December at 9pm, reportedly heading home to bed an hour later.

While many social media users expressed concern over the stunt, Bryan defended his actions, saying he didn’t feel hungover—just “quite tired.” His Guinness binge amounted to over 186 units of alcohol, more than three times the UK government's recommended monthly limit. In terms of calories, the liquid intake alone added up to roughly 17,000—excluding any food consumed during the period.

Community vs. individual drinking culture

The contrast between the Mallorca and Kilkenny drinking stories reflects two different approaches to beer-fuelled celebrations. While the German gun club's event had a communal, festive spirit in a holiday setting, Bryan’s solo mission raised questions about the glorification of excessive drinking online.

Both stories, however, have captured attention for their extreme scale, drawing cheers, laughs, and criticism in equal measure.

Caution urged despite viral fame

As beer culture continues to thrive in social settings and on social media, these high-profile drinking records highlight the enduring fascination with feats of alcohol consumption. Still, health experts consistently warn against glorifying binge drinking, particularly when alcohol intake reaches dangerous levels.

While group celebrations like those in Mallorca may be seen as jovial and team-spirited, and solo feats like Bryan’s can earn viral fame, both underscore the importance of moderation—even in a pint-filled world.
