Private equity firm Breal Group has officially rebranded as Keystone Brewing Group, marking a strategic shift in focus following a year of high-profile acquisitions in the UK craft beer sector. The London-based firm, which has purchased breweries including Black Sheep Brewing in Masham, Brick Brewery and Brew By Numbers in London, and Warwickshire’s Purity Brewing, says the name change reflects its long-term ambitions in the brewing industry.

According to the group, the Keystone identity will serve as a unifying brand across its portfolio, bringing together both legacy breweries and newer acquisitions. The rebrand aims to communicate the firm’s commitment to supporting and developing its brewing businesses while reinvigorating their place in the wider market.

London sites close as operations consolidate

The rebranding comes amid operational shifts within the group. Keystone confirmed that its two London-based breweries—Brick Brewery and Brew By Numbers (BBNo)—are being shut down. Staff at both sites are being laid off, and brewing equipment is being relocated to Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire.

Despite these closures, the group has committed £1 million in new investment into Black Sheep, which will go toward constructing a new brewhouse and expanding the brewery’s range of beers. This consolidation strategy suggests Keystone is focusing on building a centralised production hub to serve its portfolio more efficiently.

‘Keystone’ branding designed to reflect pivotal industry role

Mark Williams, CEO of Keystone Brewing Group, described the rebrand as “an exciting new chapter of growth and innovation” for the company. He explained the significance of the new name, referencing the keystone in architecture—a central element that supports and locks an arch into place. “Just as a keystone supports and sustains an arch, Keystone Brewing Group is dedicated to supporting and nurturing both established and emerging brands within its portfolio,” he said.

Williams added that the group “remains steadfast” in its mission to deliver “exceptional quality, variety, and innovation” to consumers across the UK and beyond. He emphasised that the name reflects the group’s intent to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the brewing industry.

A crowded name in the beer world

The name “Keystone” is already familiar within the beer landscape. Molson Coors owns the well-known Keystone Beer brand, whose Light variety has seen notable growth in recent years. Meanwhile, the UK is home to Keystone Brewery in Wiltshire, and Liverpool’s Chapter Brewing produces a “Keystone” West Coast Ale, which has received accolades including a feature in beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones’s list of the 250 best beers in bottle and can.

Despite the overlap, Keystone Brewing Group appears set on making its mark through consolidation, investment, and long-term growth. With substantial capital behind it and a sharpened identity, the firm aims to revitalise its portfolio of breweries and position itself as a major force in the UK’s evolving beer sector.
