Walthamstow-based Pillars Brewery has introduced a new addition to its growing range of lagers: a 4.2% ABV New Zealand Pilsner designed to highlight the diversity of the lager category. The small-batch brew is described as “light, easy drinking and filled with tropical fruit flavours,” thanks to its use of New Zealand hops and malted oats. It’s also been dry-hopped for extra aromatic intensity.

The beer will be sold in 330ml bottles, retailing at £3.50 each, and is positioned as the perfect summer drink for those looking to enjoy bold hop flavours in a crisp, clean lager style.

Exploring the global lager landscape

Co-founder and brewing director Eamonn Razaq explained that the release is part of the brewery’s ongoing mission to experiment with and champion the many styles of lager from around the world. “Our small batch exists to showcase the vast breadth of lager varieties in existence,” he said. “There are so many possibilities within the category of ‘lager’. We’re passionate about exploring and experimenting with lager styles from around the globe. This is our third New Zealand Pilsner release, which harnesses New Zealand hops to create the perfect summer lager.”

This latest pilsner demonstrates Pillars’ continued commitment to quality and innovation in a category often overlooked for experimentation. The brewery aims to challenge perceptions and elevate lager’s profile in the craft beer world.

Expanding footprint and production capabilities

Founded in 2016 as London’s first dedicated craft lager brewery, Pillars has seen significant growth in recent years. The business operates a taproom at its Walthamstow site and runs a bar at Crate on St James Street, giving local fans regular access to its core and limited-edition brews.

To keep pace with rising demand, the brewery increased its production capacity by 80% over the past year and recently installed horizontal tanks to enhance its lagering process. Looking ahead, Pillars has revealed further expansion plans, including the construction of a new brewing facility.

Lager remains a top choice for UK drinkers

The launch comes at a time when lager continues to dominate beer sales in the UK. Annabel Smith, Dea Latis co-founder and beer sommelier, recently told The Drinks Business that lager remains the most popular choice among British consumers.

“Lager is the default choice of beer for both men and women, undoubtedly because of its accessibility, availability and familiarity,” Smith said. This enduring appeal, paired with growing interest in craft and premium options, makes Pillars' New Zealand Pilsner well-positioned to capture attention in both retail and on-trade settings.

With its bold, tropical profile and sessionable ABV, the new release taps into seasonal trends while reinforcing Pillars Brewery’s position as a leader in craft lager innovation.
